I was recently grappling with ideas of what to give a food-loving friend of mine for her birthday. I had part of her present ready - a cookbook by her favorite Australian chef but the gift didn't seem quite finished.
I finally decided on flavored salt - the homemade variety - encased in a pretty jar. It was a hit and such an easy and simple food gift to make. And, the flavoring options are endless.
I started with Maldon sea salt flakes and added oven-dried lemon zest, fennel seeds and chili flakes. The mixture was so good I made an extra batch for myself.
Use flavored salt to season salads, to flavour meat or seafood, to decorate home-baked bread or to finish a dish just before serving.

That looks beautiful. I think I’ll make the salt as a present to myself!
Great idea Sally! That’s what I did too. Enjoy.
